Wisdom Teeth

A rite of passage.

Having your wisdom teeth removed is an unfortunate rite of passage. No one likes having it done, but almost all of us will need to do it at some point. Most people end up having their wisdom teeth removed in their late teens or early twenties, the point at which they usually make their first appearance.

At Smile Center, we have the technology, knowledge, and expertise necessary to make sure your surgery is performed as painlessly and complication-free as possible.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge within the mouth. When they align properly, the gum tissue is healthy, and there is plenty of room in the mouth. Wisdom teeth don’t necessarily have to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally happen.

Wisdom teeth removal is necessary when they can’t correctly erupt—growing sideways, partially emerging from the gum, or even remaining trapped beneath the gum and bone.

These poorly positioned or impacted teeth can cause many problems, usually driven by bacteria growth and infection—resulting in swelling, stiffness, pain, and illness. In addition, the pressure from the erupting wisdom teeth can move your other teeth and disrupt their natural alignment.

How Does It Work?

Wisdom teeth removals are performed in our offices, which are specially fitted for these types of oral surgeries. However, before we conduct the procedure, we will meet with you to take images of the area(s), discuss your options, and create a treatment plan.

At the time of the procedure, you will be given an anesthetic (either local or general, depending on the complexity of your tooth extraction). If you are given a general anesthetic, you will sleep through the entire procedure.

After your teeth are removed, we may need to place stitches on the wound, depending on its size. These stitches will dissolve after a few days. You will be sent home with complete instructions on how to care for your wound.
